Risk Statement Wye and Irfon (rivers)

To be read and accepted by all anglers prior to Fishing.

Anglers fishing are deemed to have read and agreed to the following assessment and mitigation suggestions.

Major River Hazards

  1. Medical emergencies in area of poor mobile phone signal
  2. Drowning
  3. Slips Trips Falls
  4. Dehydration, sunburn, heatstroke, hypothermia
  5. Eye damage due to flies, lures, hooks etc
  6. Cuts:- Weils disease, Tetanus
  7. Ticks:- Lymes Disease
  8. Poisonous Plants
  9. Fences, Barbed wire, Farming courtesy, Unpredictable Cattle
  10. Lightning, or electrical cables

Mitigation actions to be taken by anglers.

  1. There are areas of poor mobile phone signal on both rivers. IF the angler suffers from medical conditions it is recommended that they fish with a partner/ friend. As a minimum it is best to tell someone where you will be fishing and when you expect to return.
  2. There are many areas of deep water on the club water. The river bed also changes after flood events which happen annually. There are also areas on both rivers where the current can sweep your feet away. If the Builth guage is above 1.5m the current even in shallow water is dangerous.
    1. It is strongly suggested that anglers wear a life jacket and use a wading staff whilst wading.
    1. Even if bank fishing examine the bank to ensure is has not been undermined.
    1. The River bed is a mixture of rock and gravel. If wading on rock this is very slippery. Felt soles and studs are suggested on wading boots.
    1. Use of canoes or boats on the river is not allowed.
  3. Slips Trips Falls.
    1. The terrain around the rivers is mostly grass, however there are areas of rock and mud. The use of adequate footwear, staffs, etc is recommended
    1. Stiles and gates can be slippery especially when wet. Please take care.
  • The weather in Mid  Wales can be unpredictable, preparation in terms of food and drink and warm clothing and hats etc should the temperature drop is recommended.
  • The use of eye protection e.g. sunglasses and a head covering is recommended if fly fishing.
  • Cuts and grazes can lead to infections from Weils disease and tetanus.
    • Ensure any open wounds are covered in waterproof plasters.
    • Carry spare plasters to cover any scrapes etc.
    • If concerned please see a medical professional.
  • Ticks and Lymes disease, Our waters are surrounded by long grass and vegetation.
    • Wear long trousers tucked into socks if not wearing waders.
    •  If a tick bite is found please consult a medical professional for tick removal and evaluation.
  • Poisonous Plants.
    • Water hemlock, Fox gloves etc can sometimes be found on our waters. Take care to ensure plant residue / sap is not on your hands. Wash them thoroughly especially if about to eat/drink or smoke.
    • Giant hogwee can also be present, this can cause a serious burn if skin is in contact with the poisonous sap. If a rash or burn develops seek medical attention immediately.
  • Fences, Barbed wire, Farming courtesy, Unpredictable Cattle. Farmland surround most of our water.
    • Use gates and stiles to avoid damageing fences or yourself and your  clothing.
    • If walking to the river through fields keep to the edge of fields, on the river bank.
    • Unpredictable stock. Cattle especially if calves are present can be unpredictable and even aggressive. Do not spook or attempt to chase away. Avoid if at all possible.
  • Lightning, or electrical cables
    • Fishing rods are extremely good conductors of electricity.   It is recommended that if lightning is seen lay the rod flat on the ground and seek shelter e.g. back in the car and not under a tree.
    • There are point where electrical cables cross the river. Consider casting angles etc or avoid these points.

  3. Slips Trips Falls
  4. Cuts:- Weils disease, Tetanus
  5. Ticks:- Lymes Disease
  6. Poisonous Plants
  7. Fences, Barbed wire, Electric Fence
  8. Lightning, electric fence
  1. Depending on provider mobile phone signal can be poor. IF the angler suffers from medical conditions it is recommended that they fish with a partner/ friend. As a minimum it is best to tell someone where you will be fishing and when you expect to return.
  2. There are many areas of deep water on the lake along with areas of deep silt/mud.
    1. Familiarize yourself with the location of life rings etc.
    1. Keep to walkways/stages
    1. Fishing is from stages only.
    1. The use of the boat is for authorised persons only it is locked.
    1. Make a note of the Lake managers number and report any issues
  3. Slips Trips Falls.
    1. The terrain around the lake is uneven / muddy / slippery. The use of adequate footwear, staffs, etc is recommended please keep to the path/ staging.
  4. Cuts and grazes can lead to infections from Weils disease and tetanus.
    1. Ensure any open wounds are covered in waterproof plasters.
    1. Carry spare plasters to cover any scrapes etc.
    1. If concerned please see a medical professional.
  5. Ticks and Lymes disease.
    1. Wear long trousers tucked into socks if not wearing waders.
    1.  If a tick bite is found please consult a medical professional for tick removal and evaluation.
  6. Poisonous Plants.
    1. Water hemlock, Fox gloves etc can sometimes be found on our waters. Take care to ensure plant residue / sap is not on your hands. Wash them thoroughly especially if about to eat/drink or smoke.
    1. Giant hogweed can also be present, this can cause a serious burn if skin is in contact with the poisonous sap. If a rash or burn develops seek medical attention immediately.
  7. Lightning/Electric Fence.
    1. Fishing rods are extremely good conductors of electricity.  It is recommended that if lightning is seen lay the rod flat on the ground and seek shelter e.g. back in the car and not under a tree.
    1. The lake is surrounded by an electric fence. This switches in at XXpm and off at 8.30 am. Fishing is not allowed during these hours.
